Uninhabited until the 1500’s, Lanai was a sovereign land until King Kamehameha I united the Hawaiian islands under his rule. Lanai became the world’s foremost grower and exporter of pineapples – a title the former "Pineapple Isle," held for most of the 20th century.  As the cost of business rose, pineapple production was moved overseas. Throughout its history, man’s impact on the island has been minimal. Its population today is 3,193.
